The Imaginature team will be presenting two workshops during the Cape Town Flower Show. The first, Biomimicry, will be for adults and the second Biomimikids, will be for children ideally between the ages of 6-12. Read more about the workshops below.

Presented by Biomimicry Professional, Claire Janisch the biomimicry workshop moves through a series of activities to discover the genius of nature and how we can learn from it through the lense of biomimicry.

Exploring plants and their ecosystems and how we can and have been emulating nature’s genius to innovate and design products and systems, the workshop is open to anyone who’d like to be inspired, anyone who cares deeply about the sustainability of our world, innovators, creatives, and anyone who loves nature and likes to (re)connect to its genius.

Claire explores nature’s genius in diverse ecosystems and shares this new way of viewing and valuing nature through biomimicry expeditions, speaking engagements and teaching & training professionals, students and scholars. She also dives deeper into research for companies and organisations – translating nature’s blueprints, recipes and principles for the design of new products, processes and systems.

Biomimikids: Inspiring children to create a positive future by learning from nature

Where we learn FROM nature and use nature’s genius to solve human challenges and create effective, environmentally friendly materials, structures, and systems. The presentation will be taken on by Liezl le Roux who is a Conservation Biology MSc graduate from UCT and works with Imaginature to inspire and educate people about Biomimicry.

Content of the workshop

• What is Biomimcry?
• The genius around us (fun Biomimcry examples)
• That comes from what?! (Mix and match a design to it’s natural blueprint- props include sharkskin, lotus leaf, Velcro, abalone shell, feathers)
• Mini Design Challenge: children will use paper and crayons to draw their very own Biomimicry design

Liezl grew up in Cape Town and is passionate about education and environmental conservation. She believes education and our sustainable future go hand-in-hand, as Babe Dioum stated;

“In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand and we will understand only what we are taught”

You can attend the Biomimicry workshop on Friday 28 October at 17:30 and Saturday 29 October at 14:00.
